Hay-on-Wye (19.5 miles), on the cusp of the Welsh border, boasts independent bookshops, Hay Castle and the Globe at Hay, which hosts an array of performances. For some peace and solitude, visit Elan Valley (17 miles), where you can bird watch, fish, or simply stroll.
